Barbara Fischer is the Executive Director/Chief Curator of the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery at Hart House, as well as Senior Lecturer in the Masters of Visual Studies: Curatorial Studies at the University of Toronto . She held curatorial positions at Open Space Gallery, the Walter Phillips Gallery, the Art Gallery of Ontario and The Power Plant and has curated numerous exhibitions of Canadian and international artists, including solo exhibitions of the work of Fastwürms, Stan Douglas, Euan Macdonald, Rebecca Belmore, Kelly Mark, James Carl, Will Kwan, Ron Terada, Kevin Schmidt, and the nationally and internationally circulated exhibition General Idea Editions 1967-1995 (Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh; Kunstwerke ICA, Berlin; Kunstverein Munich, and Kunsthalle Zurich, among others). Major curatorial projects include Love Gasoline (1996), foodculture (1997), Logo-City (2000), New Modular (2002), and Projections (2007), the first major survey of projection-based works in the history of contemporary art in Canada, as well as the collaboratively produced exhibitions Soundtracks (2003) and Traffic: Conceptual Art in Canada 1965-1980. ” Fischer was the Curator of Mark Lewis: Cold Morning for the Canada Pavilion at the 53rd Venice Biennale, and is the recipient of the 2008 Hnatyshyn Award for Curatorial Excellence in Contemporary Art.
