Acting (English Theatre)
Mr. Metcalfe has worked as an actor, director and fight director across Canada since graduating from Studio 58 in Vancouver in 1980. He began directing in that city in the early 90’s. He was Associate Director of Vancouver’s world-famous Green Thumb Theatre for Young Audiences from 1993-1995 where, among many shows, he directed their production of New Kid by Dennis Foon, which won the Reuters prize for outstanding production at the Dublin International Theatre Festival. His Green Thumb production of The Beauty Machine won a Dora Award for outstanding production for young audiences in Toronto. His production of The Number 14 for Axis Theatre played across Canada, the US and in France, Belgium, Holland, Austria and Israel. He also directed productions of Anne of Green Gables and Peter Pan for Richmond Gateway Theatre, in addition to Lysistrata; Hotel Paradiso, and Missing Persons for Studio 58, among many others.
He is a writer with two produced screenplays and a stage farce co-written with John Lazarus. He has been a dramaturge at the Banff Playwrights Colony and the Playwrights Theatre Centre of BC. He has taught at a number of colleges in BC, and he has been a national councillor for Canadian Actors’ Equity Association. Before arriving at Prairie Theatre Exchange, he was the Artistic Director of Sunshine Theatre in Kelowna, BC.
Bob is entering his tenth season as Artistic Director at Prairie Theatre Exchange. He has directed Zadie’s Shoes; I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change; Unity (1918); Molly’s Veil; Copenhagen; Dogbarked; apple; MacGregor’s Hard Ice Cream and Gas; Chimera; Having Hope at Home; How it Works; The Vertical Hour; Lawrence and Holloman (which he revived for Persephone Theatre in Saskatoon last January to rave reviews), Glorious!; The Savannah Disputation; Burnin’ Love; The Secret Mask; and Till It Hurts.
In January he directed The 39 Steps for Persephone Theatre, and last summer he directed for Festival Antigonish Summer Theatre in Nova Scotia for the fourth year.
