VISUAL ARTS AWARDS
A native of Trinidad and a citizen of Canada for several decades, Michael Fernandes' work, since 1964, has been exhibited extensively in Nova Scotia, Canada and internationally.
His art includes mixed media, installation, video text based, collaborative and solo performance, as well as audio, artist book works, and more ephemeral media. Employing humour and frequently DIY methods, His work often takes place in the public arena exploring the interface between art and natural life.
Fernandes' work has been challenging viewers and critics alike for years. His interdisciplinary projects engage a dialogue between art, contemporary politics, the environment, subject and national identity as well as community, affirming some Contemporary theorist's revelations about the performance nature of subjectivity/identity and the symbolic characteristics of reality.
